Programs and Initiatives
We offer services in tobacco control, community participatory research, consulting, training, health disparities (infant mortality, cardiovascular disease, obesity, hypertension, cancer) prevention, promotion, interventions/policy and advocacy.
Current promising practice programs noted by The Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene: “Butt Out” Tobacco Control and Cancer prevention; and Bright Beginnings of Prince George’s County; Infant Mortality Reduction Initiative
|When families have access to affordable health care, safe neighborhoods, a clean environment, and opportunities for physical activity, recreation, nutritious foods, and other resources that contribute to a healthy lifestyle, they are more equipped to excel in school, thrive in the workforce, and live a longer and quality life. AWPLI has integrated the framework of HFA “twelve critical elements”, standards, assessment tools and practices into the daily operation of its’ Prince George’s County: Infant Mortality Reduction to prevent additional pressures and/or reduce the pressure of hardships on parents and their children. Butt Out is a holistic-based tobacco control, policy, enforcement, and cancer prevention service that aims to prevent, reduce and/or eliminate the risk of cancer among communities. Currently, Butt Out’s largest program, the Maryland Regional African-American Tobacco Control Networks (RAATCN) serves the entire state of Maryland’s Historically Black Colleges and Universities and their surrounding communities. |Promise Neighborhoods DFC is a coalition of concerned community members seeking to eliminate the abuse of alcohol and synthetic marijuana by teens in the District Heights/Forestville/Oxon Hill area. The coalition sponsors community events that educate all about the harms of these abuses and the consequences to the the community. Started in 2014, Promise Neighborhoods DFC has brought together experts to come up with solid solutions to alleviate the problems with teen alcohol and synthetic marijuana abuse. The leaders of the coalition have been trained by some of the best minds in coalition building and sustainability. In the future, Promise Neighborhoods DFC seeks to continue its work in its community, but also assist and garner assistance from other coalitions that are doing similar work throughout the nation.
